More on TV ads

Now that I'm a regular TV watcher again, I find myself really upset about TV ads. There's a really good show that you're enjoying with your friends, but every so often you must pay the piper by watching a block of these things, which are like a horrible insane person barging into the room and cavorting noisily for a few minutes. I suspect that ads have always been this offensive, but I was just used to them back to when I watched national-average amounts of TV.

Muting helps a little bit. Side note: some ads that try to be funny are actually funnier muted than with sound. We thought an ad for Unreal Tournament (which N plays far too much) was pretty funny. (It showed a woman identifying a man at a morgue, who then opens his eyes, gets up off the slab and runs off in a hurry. Ha ha! He respawned! Funny!) But then we watched it a second time with the sound. Aah, we could have written better lines than that.

Anyway, this is why we need a Tivo. I should go to Cthulhia's house sometime just to see how that thing works.

Some ads I find so horrible that I am compelled to simply turn the TV off whenever they appear (mute isn't good enough). The TV goes back on a few minutes later when I'm pretty sure it is safe. (One particular Hooked on Phonics ad was okay until this one girl with a horribly squealy voice... TV had to go off until that girl was gone because even the sight of her reminded me of that squealy voice).

Worse -- Sometimes they'll show an ad.. then show the exact same ad immediatly afterwards. When this happens I usually have to point at the TV and yell, REPEAT AD! AAAAAAAUUUG! AAAUUUUG! AAAAAUUUG!. The yelling stops when the repeat ad is over.

On the flip side -- A friend of mine has an annoying habit of channel flipping as soon as an ad starts. flip flip flip flip flip flip flip watch for 15 seconds flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip watch for 10 seconds flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip watch for 15 seconds flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip watch for 5 seconds flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip This is how remotes are used for evil... it's sorta like a Chinese water torture. By the time he stops channel flipping the show had already been back on for two minutes.
