Car is back. It has a new shift cable and a new battery. The latter part was installed while I waited; when I showed up to collect the car, the head mechanic said he'd let it go as it was, but strongly recommended I get a new battery while I was there, since the current one was old, cruddy, and generally untrustworthy, by his eye. I was wary of what looked like last-minute salesmanship, but couldn't turn down his offer of free labor on the install, and I suppose I liked the idea of having something new in the car, now that it's mine all mine.
