Dear people with PS2 knowledge: I need a video game that is not a giant sprawling adventure. I like those games but I already have several; what I need is a goofy game (or three) that one can sit down and play for 10 minutes whee-la without worrying about where you were when you last saved. Suggestions?

I've always found those Grand Theft Auto (3 and Vice City especially) are good for that sort of thing. They have their own sprawling adventure parts, but if you want to you can noodle around doing other things like chasing down criminals vigilante style, running around the city putting out fires, doing 'crazy-taxi' jobs, or you can just run around the city beating random people up randomly.

Vice City does have some advantages over GTA3 in certain respects: (1) in GTA3 once you get past certain missions some areas of the city run by certain gang members will immediately start shooting at you -- making it difficult to do side missions like taxi driving or vigilante missions. (2) As far as the adventure goes, they tried to make each mission significantly different from each other. (3) If you want to get '100% completion' in the game GTA3 requires you to do missions in a fairly specific order otherwise you'll end up not being able to go on some of the missions at all -- I don't think Vice City has that limitation but I could be wrong. One disadvantage of Vice City -- I find the 80's theme gets a bit annoying after a while.

My roommate has Burnout 2. Basically a racing game with a fairly good crash simulator. It even has 'crash mode' where you drive really fast into a cluster of traffic and try to cause the biggest accident you can.
