I can sympathize with your pain. My recent cablemodem experiences at AT&T Broadband / Comcast, and now Suscom have actually been pretty good -- but Adelphia was horrible. In general, I think it is the case of "it works great" or "it has problems and we have no idea how to fix it". It applies equally well to cable and DSL providers, IMO.
Speakeasy has a cool program called netshare where you can resell your bandwidth (you set the price and manage the network), and they do the billing (for a percentage). If it were available in my area (and if I had computer-using neighbors), I'd certainly try it just for that program.
