(no subject)

Made my meeting with Dawn at the staffing agency this morning, even though I blew several die rolls: overslept by an hour, didn't trim my beard, failed to notice dried toothpaste on my chin, forgot to bring a show-off copy of P&X, and went the wrong way on 128 for several miles. But it all worked out anyway, and Dawn's now on the case for me, a-lookin for contracts.

On Melissa's advice I wore a tie today, for the first time in three or four years. I actually have a collection of smart-looking ties that go well with the clothes colors I favor, all left over from my days at Hermon. So maybe that canceled out the toothpaste issue.

More interestingly, I got a call en route from the first position I applied to, two weeks ago; they want to interview me. That would be exciting, since it represents an actual, potential career direction in a field I find very interesting, rather than a mere function to fill. The call also confirms the fact that not hearing back immediately from companies I apply to doesn't necessarily mean they're not interested. Yeah, I think things are going as well as I can hope. Pretty good.

Bioinformatics FAQ

I was willing to pony up the $2.50 or whatever that the Globe's online archives want in order to deliver an old article, since a big feature story the paper ran on Biotechnology in Boston has suddenly become much more interesting to me. (See previous entry, last paragraph.) However, that site's all gebroken.

Happily, this freed me to do what I should have done in the first place, and Google quickly led me to a very interesting Bioinformatics FAQ. (I searched first for "biotechnology FAQ" and got a lot of documents about modified food concerns.)
