Saw David Lynch's "Inland Empire"

As expected: Enjoyed, but cannot generally recommend. This is not an accessible film. I have some notions of the story that the completely exploded narrative assembles into, but that's it. I look forward to reading other peoples' interpretations later on; I know that I didn't appreciate Mulholland Drive until I read John Cooper's take on it.

It is somewhat similar in structure to that earlier movie, having two distinct parts, one distinctly "realer" than the other. After a completely surreal prologue, Inland Empire follows a basically linear and solid narrative for about an hour, but then one of the characters passes through a door that she shouldn't have. Out comes two hours of completely disjointed storytelling and phantasmagoria, leading to an uncertain ending.

Far be it for me to say, but I think it could have been an hour shorter. I started feeling some real fatigue at the 90-minute mark, and then impatience. This was relieved occasionally by some of the scariest shit I've seen in a movie theater, even though it was basically variations on actors making faces at the camera, boo. I shivered a lot.

Off to go party larty farty. Happy New Year, y'all.
