According to the nice young probably-Indian gentleman I just spoke to when I called Delta's number, my dead license will get me through if I back it up with my social security card. I'm skeptical, but it's enough to snuff out any chance of me willingly going to the Chinatown RMV office before tomorrow afternoon. We will still leave with enough lead time to counteract security kerfuffles. From all that I've read, if you don't have ID they like, all they'll do is push you through extra screening procedures, provided that you don't act like either an unstable nutjob or a foaming privacy advocate.

If you're concerned about time, you can check waittimes at the DMV online.

So the secret law apparantly does say that people need not show ID if they submit to additional screening (selectee) so you shouldn't need it. [livejournal.com profile] apkeimel got through (post 9/11) with no valid picture ID previously due to a lost license (and subsequent ID theft!) but she had only paper ID and her word.

Advice, don't have a printed copy of the "Gilmore v. Ashcroft" decision in your papers. "Papers please... "

Are you crazy?

Why the hell did you let your license expire?! In Massachusetts, you can renew your license over the web. I haven't owned a car in 10 years and I've got a valid license. It's a pain in the nuts to get around this big old country without a license to provide your not a "tearist."

Now, you're going to have to do a driving testing in Cambridge or Somerville. Eek! Fear! Loathing! Despire!
