An interesting analysis of the "FAIL!" meme, showing up just as it was starting to make me a little cranky.

Analysis via twitter? F...! :-)

All he says is, "People are using FAIL to express an opinion. They should make it more obvious that an opinion is what they are expressing." And then gives a bunch of examples of people using "fail", sometimes quoted as if they were trying to emphasize that it's only their opinion, or using it as a noun ("Oh my god it's full of fail!") which to me at least seems intended to not be taken very seriously.

I think it's weird that anyone takes anyone's opinion as anything other than opinion. "That's only your opinion" is a poor criticism, because what else could it be? Someone else's opinion? Even if I say, "This is a matter of objective fact", I'm obviously only expressing my opinion that that's what it is.

So I'm not convinced there's any substance here beyond a popular expression that's no longer groovy. Novelty usually wears off, and this is one of them. It's a more interesting question to ask why it doesn't in other cases, but about that I have neither opinion nor clue.
