norf again
After waffling a bit, decided to go to Maine after all, Saturday evening. I had completed several hours of work on the leak-hunt by then, and figured that I may as well not renege on previous announcements of my arrival, after all. I used to do this a lot, leave friends in the lurch by changing my mind about things, or neglectfully schedule two social things simultaneously. Trying to get better about it.
Succeeded in sampling a PS2 for the first time, at house
kyroraz. The platform is apparently rich in CRPGs and fighting games, neither of which I care for very much. It also has lots of racing games, which I do like. In the end, I decided to go with the PS2 as my first modern system; no Zelda or Monkey Ball, and no purty antialiased graphics, but a wider variety of games, and the compatibility with DVDs and my PSX game collection also wins. I cemented this decision by picking up a bunch of PS2 swag at Game Trader's in Augusta, a lovely store I don't think I've visited since I moved from Maine. They had no systems in stock, but I scored a bunch of used games for $15 a pop, including the hard-to-find Ico, which I've been wanting to see ever since Zarf gushed about it. All the others were driving games, though I didn't realize this until I was at the counter. BRUM! ERT! BRUM! ERT! I will buy a system locally, ASAP.
It was nice to see the old F&F as always (and definitively meet
poetgeek; I know I've met him once or twice before, but for some reason my mental image of him was different enough from reality that I had to ask him if 'twas truly he. Embarrassing!), but I actually spent half or more of my time there working, and managed to discover the source of the memory leak, at last. The remedy is proving trickier than it should, unfortunately; I think I've got a handle on it for now, but I don't totally trust the setup. Sigh. Well... this really has taught me something important about programming. I'll never be so sloppy with memory management again, not even in Perl, because it is so, so hard to figure out where memory problems lie when you have lots and lots of code.
Speaking of waffling, N has confessed to me some uncertainty about his moving plans, but it appears that he got a positive callback from a place he looked at last week, and is now pretty sure he'll take it. Hmm.
