Ask Dr. LJ: Make me a star. (Maybe.)

Perhaps you've overheard my recent mumbling about wanting to get involved with drama. The stage-and-screen kind, yes, not the day-to-day kind. I guess I just need another outlet for my ego, and I've always been interested in performing, even though it's not something I've formally participated in since high school. (Bye-Bye Birdie, and I had the, uhh, the Dick van Dyke character aced, but then lost it when I had to leave the state for a couple of months due to parental fiat, and had to settle for a choral role instead. Grunt.)

I've recently realized that I do, in fact, know many people involved in this sort of thing, and the people are y'all, or a subsection thereof, anyway. Soooo. I... really don't know the first thing about getting involved in stage productions (and the like) in this, the scary world of grown-ups. If any of you would like to help let your pal jmac vex and besquirm local audiences, I would welcome whatever advice or opportunity-pointers you may have, even if it's only "Here, read this FAQ." (Or, for that matter, "My advice? Don't.") Thanks!

So that means you sing, right? Come to Carmen next week and let MITG&SP try to lure you in. :-)

Just show up..

For many theaters of the community or small type, just show up and express interest. They'll tell you whether they're a union place or not [some theaters are union aka 'equity' and you can't get in without a card. You don't want one] and what you can help with.

It'd be good to get an idea of whether you can stand the people you'd be working with or not before auditioning for something. While you do random things, you can talk to actors and see what they're opinions are.

Get involved in the theater before you decide to act.

Or, if you just wanna beat on people with a sword in front of other people, get back with ATACC. :)

help your pal jmac vex and besquirm -- you seem to have left out the z....

If you're looking to perform, keep an eye out for audition notices (Theatre 411 is a good place to look, say).

If you're looking to do technical work--well, the same is true; also, I'm currently in a show that could very much use some technical help, even if it's just another pair of hands to help build and move things in. If you're interested in helping out, I can send you the email addresses of the people to contact, or I can let you know when and where Sunday we're meeting...
