Acts

Melissa said that Acts made her think about a career in microchip design. It is similarly making me think about biotech, especially bioinformatics, a peculiar field that needs Perl hackers. I think I'd really like to play in that pool for a few years.

Finished the Cocoa book last night, skipping through the penultimate few chapters about specific UI widgets I don't care very much about at the moment to get to the goal chapter, where the author builds a very simple DocBook editor before your eyes. I dedicated much of this afternoon to thinking about Duck, my idea for a very sophisticated DocBook editor. Oh, the problems and puzzles inherent in it. I nailed a lot of stuff down, inlcuding the project's scope and some key UI issues, but some solutions are still pending further research into some fundamental Cocoa classes. I'm optimistic.

Hmm, haven't worked on any writing in about five days. Yipe. Well, absorbing the Cocoa book counts for something, but I got to get back on that track. If I can work up the gumption, I'll start corndog weblogs on my iBook about Duck and Macnut. What a bizarre sentence that was.

(Duck's name, and its obvious and eventual icon, is pending permission from ORA, who puts a cute little wood duck on its DocBook book cover. It occurred to me only today that it would be my second major software project, after last year's Fox, named after a monosyllabic animal that gets shot often.)

Mm. Time to go to Mostly Looney night.
