The wind is very strong right now, and all the half-masted flags are flapping noisily, encouraging us to look up at them.

Just like this day last year, I overslept against my will, the result of staying up until the wee hours furiously editing and tweaking a book. Unlike last year, I didn't sleep with the radio on, though I will admit I stumbled to my computer soon as I could and tuned into boston.com just to make sure nothing was amiss. No more than the usual.

Walking to work I saw Hilary Scott at the compass rose, directing some DPW guys with the installation of his sculpture. Currently it's wrapped in a blue tarp.A little thing. I am sorry that my schedule will likely preclude me from attending the unveiling tonight. I reacted with surprise when I read that he'd been tapped to produce Somerville's official 9/11 memorial; when I think of Hilary's work, I think of giant foam dragons and lunatic clock faces and athropomorphized kitchenware. I know he can make more subdued sculpture, but this is not the sculpture that he usually shows off. So, I am very curious to see what he has made.
