I am amused that this book exists. Kevin Mitnick writes about social engineering. I think I would like to read it sometime.

I fall victim to social engineering every day, I suppose, in that I often let strangers come through the door with me every time I swipe by card through the card reader next to this building's front door. I actually feel self-conscious about it every time, but what else is there to do? I'm not about to shove them all out of the way and push the door closed in their faces. I loves people too much.

Here is a not-to-scale approximation of the sign taped to the door leading to the hallway that contains a giant stick-and-ball model of some protein that is as tall as I am:

         KEEP

         DOOR call pizza
                for my
        CLOSED

A tidy spammer decided to sign me and a bunch of random people up to a mailing list and then spam that, instead of just cramming all our addresses into the address fields like a normal spammer. So you can imagine the exchange when someone group-replied to it.

stop spamming, me or I will sue, you.

WHAT YOU SAY!!!!!! I AM NOT SPAMING U WHO ARE U!!!!!!11!!!!!!!!!!1!!

And so on. I wrote a polite letter to the list this morning explaining my take on the situation and recommended behavior (use a spam filter and think happy thoughts), but at least one person hasn't read it so far (or chosen to disregard it). Hum dee.
