Second Edition
Mar. 4th, 2003 01:00 amI have been continually taking notes for the second edition. Based on the feedback we've received so far -- from tech reviewers, reader reviews, and errata submissions -- the first edition doesn't have any obvious holes in its topical coverage, so it looks like 2E changes will be stuff we the authors think would be nice to add to the existing base, plus whatever changes Apple might make with Panther (version 10.3).
To hear Chuck tell it, work on 2E should actually begin... alarmingly soon, in order to coincide with Panther's release. I did not run screaming from the building, nor did I demand to see another contract right then and there. But I'm definitely drifting in that direction, and the tone of the conversation was definitely tacit assumption that I'd be part of the project. I dunno, I dunno. We'll see what happens. I'll have to give it some deep thought soon. The hingey question is whether 2E would be relatively easy to make, simply a refinement and an update of the existing book.
I actually have been working up an interest in tweaking the book a little. I've started to actually use the book a little, you see (for I have forgotten much of what I've written; good thing I wrote it all down, eh) and am not impressed with what I sometimes find. Last night, for example, I found a paragraph that begins "Two examples of this include..." and then it lists one thing. Ugh. Probably nobody bothers to submit an errata for that, since it's not an error in the book's technical content, but now I'm worried that the book is filled with these little lucky diaper nuggets. I'd like to do what Chuck has done, and physically mark up a copy with all the things that I feel need adjustment.
Also, Greg found the hidden fart. I didn't mean to hide a fart in the book but I guess it happened anyway. A challenge to my readers! Find the fart. Bonus if you find farts besides the one I now know about.
Finally, this is the funniest thing I've seen all week.
