I have the beginning of the start of an idea for a work of fiction of significant length. Really, it's an idea that's been orbiting the tiny blue dot of my attention for at least a couple of years; if you've ever spoken to me iRL you've likely heard me bring it up once or twice, perhaps even in a "Someday I'm gonna write a story about..." context. Tonight, for the first time, it hit its regular perihelion when I wasn't too wrapped up in other, contract-bound writing to take it seriously. So, bloop bloop bloop, up fills the Wiki with the odd idears. (Grr grr where is BrainDump? It would be so much better at this. Oh well.)

Potential fun lay in the fact that it'll involve a goodly amount of historical research, and in the fact that the idea more defines a setting than a plot, a setting with enough conceptual nooks are crannies to generate lots of plots on its own. Worries lay in the fact that it easily falls into a very well known subgenre that I usually find tiresome and sometimes downright offensive. Of course, half my motivation probably lay in the egocentric desire to do it right this time.

Don't know if it's going anywhere, of course, but I thought I'd note its arrival anyway. For my future self to reference, more than anything. Just in case.

After posting my ad to all electronic forums I initially had in mind, I have gotten exactly one response-as-intended, from a complete stranger. This is filtering out the spam to post my ads on other sites, the friendly offers from people to propagate my ad to other mailing lists, and, worryingly, invitations to abandon my search and move in with other people in the area who have been looking for roommates for months. I wonder if I should start to be concerned. It hasn't been a week since I started looking, but I guess I was expecting more response sooner than this. Hrmpfh.

I have learned that the vacancy rate in the area has octupled over the last couple of years... which is to say, it's about eight percent now. Mumble. Well, we'll see.
