I wonder why anyone asks "What is ____?" anymore, or at least bothers to ask on an Internet message board of some kind. I can only imagine that these people either don't know about Google, or know about it but haven't yet developed a comfort in turning to it with any reasonably simple question, or hope to make new friends by giving people a chance to show off their knowledge, or -- lamest of all -- hope to prompt someone else to write about some topic the questioner already knows about, and therefore lend credibility to and increase interest in it. As time passes I suppose the former two groups will shrink but the latter two will remain constant. (This triggered by my witnessing someone asking Neil Gaiman what "slash" fanfiction was, after the topic of Real-Person Slash -- specifically, that which involves Mr. G. -- came up in his weblog.)

[livejournal.com profile] keimel reports that he's configured his network monitoring software to emit a Wilhelm every time something falls over. Excellent.

A magazine performed the Voight-Kampff Test on some Californian gubernatorial applicants to determine whether or not they're replicants, and mulls over the results. Not entirely sensical when removed from the original context of an animal-deprived world, but an appreciable effort nonetheless.

(Props to [livejournal.com profile] kynn for the link.)
