Tech Troll #2: ComicsML
Oct. 20th, 2003 04:04 pm(This troll not locked, but not propagated to jmac.org either... please feel free to forward to individuals you think may be interested.)
Summary:
I "own" a technology called ComicsML. It's potentially neat and fun and I've been ignoring it for years. It's long past time for someone else to pick it up. How about yoooooou?
Backstory:
Before Volity, my last big time for invention happened around the beginning of 2001. (Not coincidentally, it was the brief period between my moving to Boston (inspiration goes up) and my starting to sign book contracts (inspiration goes foo).) One invention that received a lot of attention was the idea for an XML-based markup language for online comics, which I called ComicsML. Despite all the interest it garnered, my own interest in it sheared off rapidly when I found my free time wholly consumed by writing tech books. By the time I came out of it at the end of 2002, my motivation to do anything with comics, let alone ComicsML, had become indefinitely backburnered.
However, I'm convinced that the idea is still a good one, becuase I still get at least a trickle of queries about it, and every so often something really unexpected happens, like a new ComicsML-based layout application for Mac OS X. (!!!.)
So, I ask you: can see yourself taking the reins of a very interesting, highly visible, and potentially hella cool technical project involving the future of comics? If so, please write me an email before Nov. 15, 2003 stating why you'd be a good choice for the new ComicsML project leader, and what you would like to do with it. I will choose one new project leader, who will win control over the DTD and the website. (The article I wrote about it for the O'Reilly Network stays mine, but the remainder of the site's content is entirely fungible.) This person will then have ultimate responsibility for ComicsML's future directions, but I'd like to remain a part of the project, in a passive, advisory role.
(Special note: One of you may be thinking "!" because we had talked about this same transfer of power long ago. We didn't really get anywhere with it, though, and I see that you've been about as busy as I with your own projects. I thought I'd give the thing a good toss up in the air before letting it land ker-thunk in someone else's field. If you're still interested, please follow the above procedure. :) )
