Finally got my phone's picture-mailing feature to work, as seen with this depiction of my housemate. (Some of you may have met him; he's about two feet tall and hangs out near my TV.)

Yeah, well... I got the cheapest one they had (a Sony Ericsson T610, if you must know), and this is about what I expected. For a camera somehow hacked into a phone that's the same size and shape as my previous one, and obviously lacking a flash (this photo was taken with "night mode" turned on, and I'm very curious about what that actually does), it ain't bad. I'm sure I'll have some fun with this. Looking forward to setting up auto-blogging scripts this weekend...!

Have already noted how I spent NYE cleaning stuff; decided yesterday that I'd let that set the tone for home maintenance this year. So, retroactive resolution: I shall never feel compelled to apologize for the mess again, by virtue of the mess being absent.

Just now I noticed that I managed to track some dirt in -- a small pile, rigidly defined. Time was I'd just step around it until I forgot enough times that it got ground into invisible dust. Argh! I am ashamed to admit this but it is true. Tonight, though, I broke out the vacuum cleaner. Once the immediate threat was neutralized, went ahead and gave nearby planar surfaces a solid upsucking. Very good.

Also, since the year began, I have been washing dishes about as often as I've been brushing my teeth.

And now you know what today's project was.

Went ahead and wrote my own Perl script, though I'm sure plenty of these exist already. CPAN Modules used:
  • Mime::Parser
  • LJ::Simple
  • Image::Magick::Thumbnail

I may post it somewhere if I get around to fixing an embarrassing hack (based on my apparent nongrokking of umask()). If you want to see it before then, go ahead and ask.

Observations:
  • Image quality is, offically, shitty. Of course it's kinda what I was expecting (it's a phone that can take pictures, not a dedicated camera), but to actually see it: eh. Not convinced that there aren't better models in the same price range, but this was an utterly unresearched purchase, so them's my cookies, ma.
  • Typing is easier than I thought it'd be. The default mode for typing text messages lets you just key in the numeric pattern for each word, and the phone's internal dictionary guesses what word is the one you most likely wanted, from the possible combinations. If it guesses wrong, you can see the whole list of possible words, and select the correct one (or define a new word). It looks like it doesn't do this contextually, or does so imperfectly, hence "where I an" (which I didn't notice at the time).
  • Another reason to regret not thinking this purchase through: no GPS! I mean, really; these posts need to have attached global coordinates. Maybe next year.

Random Amusement for you: Fire up iTunes and search for constant sorrow.

More variations on the super-catchy O Brother, Where Art Thou? ballad than you can shake a gopher on a stick at, from Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, and BATTLESTAR AMERICA!!! whom I haven't heard of until just now but I just felt like yelling it at you.
