* Taxes done. Once again, paying more than I have the year before. I actually ended up doing a lot of freelance programming for which I was well-compensated, so no complaints. I claimed my G5 as an expense for that work, and while this didn't save me tons of money, it more than covered the price of this year's TurboTax session, so that was pretty good.

* Obtained new credit card. I got a Motley Fool one, after shopping around for the best rates. I like Motley Fool, even though I'm not a paying member of their online community, tho there are many fine reasons why I oughtta be. Anyway, hope to be able to start repairing my credit rating through its careful use.

Careful? The first thing I did with it was have it inject a couple grand into my empty checking account, so I could afford to pay my taxes. But wait, why is my checking account empty? It is because I have been too lazy to deposit any checks since... maybe since 2005 started? There's a fat bank of them sitting on my bookshelf. And that, friends, is the pathetic thing. I will now start the adventure of mailing them into NetBank a couple at a time, hoping that they're all still good.

* Even though it's very old, the State Farm check is still good. I know because I called and asked a while ago. Am finally going to deposit that, because am finally fixing the car, because am giving it to Peter for certain by the end of this month. Told him over the phone that I was going to spend enough money to make it completely safe to drive again, but wasn't going to care too much about how it looked. This made him get a little whiny at me. I reminded him that he is getting a free car. Sigh. We'll see how it goes.

* Signed up for Zipcar today. Getting the middlest of their payment plans, where you commit to $50 a month, but get more usage out of that fifty than you would on the minimal pay-as-you-go plan. (Also getting a little discount through my .edu affiliation.) It's funny that I will be paying for my cellphone and "my" car in a similar fashion.

I really like Zipcar's attitude. Their signup confirmation page made reference to their "exorbitant late fees", in so many words. Also they advise to check under the car for penguins before entering.

* Tried to sign up for SCAT classes. Discovered that the station's sense of organization is sub-me-level. Apparently I was supposed to have been issued a membership card by now, but I haven't been, which sent the guy manning the counter to dig through paper records. And stare at the desk's ancient computer screen, and flip through the most recent newsletter. (?!) Then he discovered that they were out of blank receipts, so I couldn't pay for the classes anyway. Was told to come back Monday. Yikes! But, community television... it's not like I feel have any right to get mad at the lousy customer service, because: what customer?

BTW, in case any fellow Somervudlians want to join me, I am planning on taking the full suite of Basic Production Classes as outlined in the SCAT class schedule, starting in a week or two. Going to aim for Section I (Mondays) of the field-production class; all the others have only one section each.

* Happy birthday to the number-one enneaphile in my life.
