Today was a good day. Slept late without guilt to make up for sleep lost to a camera gig yesterday. In the afternoon, over coffee, I set up some goals and spent the next six or seven hours knocking them down. Even with a grocery shopping trip in the middle, there was exactly enough time to hit everything. I really have to do this every day, y'know?

An ugly version of the dynamic website is done and sent off to our designer to give him a sense of what sort of content we'll have.

Now that we have a logo (as well as a tagline that I made up a long time ago), I started to design wearable Volity merch at Zazzle.com. I like the possibilities but I immediately got hung up on a user interface issue that doesn't make it clear whether or not they recognize the transparent bits of graphics that you upload. I wrote them about it.

Had a conversation about a Usenet newsgroup I used to read every day and enjoy but have drifted away from, like every other newsgroup I liked. In the last few years its population has been evenly divided between the community's BNFs/creators, newbies who are all dorky/clueless/insane, and trolls. I theorize the first third are there because they have nowhere else to go, and the last two thirds are there because they have nothing better to do. I'd be willing to wager that in every case they've been on Usenet for many years.

What the group needs is way to be visible to sane and bright newbies, and maybe quash the trolls too. Usenet is not that way, not anymore. I am not sure what the way is -- it's more complicated than "hey gang, let's set up an LJ for it" -- but it has to be out there somewhere.

I am worried that people are going to go see Night Watch and wonder what I was on about. Part of my enjoyment came from the fact that among my moviegoing party were a master fantasist, two players from the occasional modern-fantasy RPG group I'm in, and the GM from same (himself a fantasy crafter of no mean skill). We are all suckers for the movie's sort of subject matter and fed off each others' suckeriness. So YMMV a lot.

I am sad that it's apparently being marketed in the US as a horror movie. Yeah it's filled with monsters, but it's an SF adventure story, more akin to Buffy or LOTR than to Scream.
