Whose dark materials are they, anyway?

jadelennox reports that references to God and the Church are to be expunged from the "His Dark Materials" films. She draws some kidlit comparisons; if I may dawdle in the land of mainstream movies, I'd suggest that it's like dropping all mention of Nazis from the Indiana Jones movies, or even like eliding the Hobbits out of that other thing, replacing them with wisecracking farmboys or something.

It's going to be a rough time keeping the story's oiginal essence, after that cut. I can see how it's possible to arrive at the same destination, but this irrevocably changes the path. I wish them the best of luck. Sigh.

I'll admit when I first heard about this, I thought, "wow, they're going to have to really mess with it in order not to get lynched," and wondering how they were going to do the Yhwh death scene.
