Coldest day of the year so far

And I managed to leave my hat on the T the very first day I left the house with it this winter... last week.

No worries; I tend to lose one hat a month, during hat-wearing months. It would be different if I wore my hat every day, like I do with my glasses or my cellphone, enough to incorporate it into my self-extension field. Fooey.

I hate buying hats. I don't know where to get them, and I feel like I'll get the wrong one and look ridiculous. Very few places seem to carry the solid-black, non-patterned "cat burglar" pull-down caps that I favor. (See, I don't even know what they're properly called. I hate buying hats.)

Wikipedia has a good page on types of hats.

Back when I was required to wear silly clothes to work everyday, my mandatory cap had these ear flaps which folded up inside the cap. One day I discovered how wonderful it was to pull them down, over my ears (and back of head); the gentle teasing I got from coworkers wasn't enough to convince me to stop using them. Now I have a magically warm fleece balaclava, and I look stupider than I did with camoflage ear flaps, but I figure looking ridiculous is a small price to pay.

Since you hate buying hats and often lose them, maybe, once you find a hat you like okay you should be several of them--that way when you lose one, you don't have go out shopping for a replacement.

You just need to remember where the heck you stashed all those extra hats.

Do you mean just a plain black knit cap, like a few available among the first 100 in this Froogle search? Hmmm, ones similar to that are popular among the gangsta set...I've had one for years and received some nasty looks when I was at a campground in Arizona five years ago--evidently they thought I was a young station-wagon driving thug wanna-be.

An old sidebar in 'The Onion' had a blurb called 'Hats Off to Winter' summarized the problem I have with stocking caps. Take off your stocking cap to reveal what type of hat hair! The choices:

Static Cling Stickup
The Headmeld
Squirrels Love Nest

I usually ended up with The Headmeld.

balaclava is one of those hats which covers the head AND neck.

Do not confuse with Baklava. That'd make some very bad hat hair.

maybe i read too many historical romance novels, but balaclava makes me think charge of the light brigade.

Hat loss is annoying. I thought I'd lost my hat when I couldn't find it this morning. Eventually it turned up, in my coat sleeve, where I'd shoved it for safety the night before! I always lose one of a set of gloves, speed in proportion to the excellence of said gloves.

Put the gloves on a string through your coat?

Then I'd lose either both gloves, or my whole coat!
