"A Scanner Darkly" trailer

It's OK if you say "Whoa." every time Keanu says something.

I like how the trailer credits PKD by name. And I like the suggestion that the animation will be used as a sort of continuous special effect (see how the people's faces shift), as opposed to just a distinct visual style.

It's such a weird title for a movie, though, with the adverb just dangling there, pointing at nothing. I wonder how people will react to it. (There's an intentionally missing word in Dick's title; it's a pun on the phrase "through a glass darkly" but split in two. Appropriately enough.)

How is that a pun?

Maybe I should say "play on the phrase" instead. In the novel (if I'm remembering correctly) the scanner was a three-dimensional viewing mechanism, and the character is at one point reminded of the phrase by the Apostle Paul (one of PKD's favorite historical figures) as he questions the reality of what he sees before him (one of PKD's favorite questions).

Dude! Richard Linklater! I had no idea. Awesome.

If you want to see more of that style of animation, check out his Waking Life, or Lars von Trier's The Five Obstructions. I have both on tape, if you ever find a spare VCR.
