New bird

Locals:

Is it just me or is there a new sort of urban bird hanging around the area? It is a big bird, the size of a pigeon, but it is dusky-colored, and has a more needley beak than pigeons do. I see them slumming around the residential / light-commercial areas around Davis and Porter.

Do any of you know what I'm talking about? I see a lot of these guys lately, and I don't recall seeing them before.

It's probably a mourning dove. I can't say whether they have been more common recently or not. I know I occasionally see them. Maybe you didn't pay much attention before and just thought they were pigeons, and now that you have noticed a difference, you're seeing them everywhere because of, um, that thing where you see things because you're looking for them (I forget the word; I just woke up from a nap is my excuse).

Recency Illusion

Yah, could be. The likelihood of this is why I posted in this in my journal and not the Davis Square one.

I was hoping it was something sexier like evidence of disrupted migratory patterns from climate chance or some shit.

The wet weather in the winter could have favored them somehow... Perhaps some bug they find yummy is especially popular. I've been noticing an increase in dragonfly population around here for that reason (and thank goodness, because who wants MORE mosquitos?)

i agree, sounds like a mourning dove. they coo, if you catch one making noise. i've seen larger bunches of them a few times in the last couple of days, it could be a seasonal thing.
