Today's output for screen -DR was not the usual "(New screen)" but "Be careful! New screen tonight."

I cannot grumble about "geek humor" if, in fact, I get the joke. And the joke was presented to me while launching an obscure command-line Unix shell utility.

(Also screen -list prepends its output with "Your inventory:" OK guys.)

We had a half moon last night. What's your system clock doing?

You can't get the wood, you know.

Clock is correct. I don't run screen very often on this particular machine, so maybe it's always in goofball Nethack mode, which would be kind of disappointing.

Then again I learned Linux on machines whose sudo programs were compiled to quote The Goon Show at you if you mistyped your password, and I think I miss them a little bit now.

And you once used machines where we custom made up some insults for sudo as well, just cause we could. ;)

I do not get this behavior from screen, on debian 4.0 boxen. *sigh*

I wonder what flavor of screen this comes in, but tis not in mine.

At one point during my college trials, with accounts spread out over a few *nix machines, I was always very grumbly when one's "logout" command was another's "exit" and I was always getting them mixed up. So I just whipped up a few aliases to solve the problem.

I didn't alias "logout" to "exit", though. I had it echo "No, no, no, EXIT, you moron."

And for more game fun, have you ever tried the Adventure Shell? Fun for a few minutes at least.

Screen will go into nethack mode if there is a ~/.nethackrc file in place (not the only way to enable it, but a common one.)

I thought it was still in Debian, it was in older version I know and remains in Ubuntu 7.04 -- I just checked.

(You do have to compile the nethack options in, so maybe Debian 4 has stripped that.)

FWIW, this is a screen obtained via Fink, the Mac OS X port of Debian's package manager.

It took me way too long to get this uploaded. But I couldn't resist.
