jwz writes a list of advice to the novice city-cyclist (optimized for SF but applicable in any urban setting, I think). Of particular note:

Safety: I follow the Zodiac approach: always assume the cars can see you perfectly, and are trying to kill you. If an intersection seems iffy, use the sidewalk and crosswalks. If big streets like Market and Van Ness freak you out, there are always less traficky ways to go, or just stay on the sidewalks.

I've had cars yell at me to ride on the sidewalks and pedestrians yell at me to ride on the streets -- both deserve a smack in the jaw. Honestly where I'm at there's occasionally need to use both.

On SecondLife I saw a region named 'AppleSeed' and was wondering if it was your own. I couldn't teleport there so I wasn't able to poke around with trying to find out who owned it or if there were any of your AppleSeed logos floating about.

These seem pretty sensible. When I was a kid we were taught to ride like we were invisible. Now as an adult riding in The City That Bicycle Lanes Forgot it seems like treating cars are hostile predators is more reasonable.

From what I've noticed, it seems that most cyclists ignore traffic lights, i.e. they go right through red lights as though the lights don't apply to them. (Lest you think I'm biased, I even noticed this back when I was a bicycle commuter; I actually felt self-concious stopping at red lights and watching other cyclists go right by me.)

Then there was the guy I saw last year who was riding his bike against traffic, in between two oncoming lanes rather than against the curb, and steering with one hand because he was on his cell phone. Of course he wasn't wearing a helmet or anything.

Another good thing to do is to familiarize yourself with bike laws in your state/region. In Hawaii, riding on sidewalks in business areas is illegal. This is not great, since business districts also tend to have heavy traffic. Sometimes it does seem like a catch-22... it reminds my of my old drivers handbook that actually had a line reading something like this: "Maintaining speed with the flow of traffic is one of the safest things you can do. Going faster or slower than the surrounding traffic is one of the leading causes of accidents and traffic-related injuries in the country. Always go at the speed of the cars around you, unless they are going over the speed limit. That is illegal."

Erm, I'm not sure this is the best advice to be distributing, jmac. (Of course, I think I might be well on my way to being the person described in item 1.)

Before I started bike commuting, I read a large amount of advice, both on the Internet and in books. (I also read my bike manual, if you can believe it.) Not that I'm an expert, by any means, but this advice conflicts with what the majority of experts advise in several ways, and also conflicts with what little I have learned through experience. I mean, some of the points are good, but some are seriously dumb and/or dangerous.

For someone who needs good advice and hands-on support before venturing into city commutting (at least in Boston) MassBike has an awesome website and a free two hour class (and then more paid classes).

Just saying. :)
