Google's launched a 3d social chatty thingy. The avatars in the trailer movie all appear to be either Bratz-esque homunculettes or chubby little squirrelly critters, which tells me that Google is narrowly targeting the service towards the dual core virtual-world markets of
  1. Image-conscious youths, primarily teenage girls and young women, eager to spend real money on virtual goods with designer names, and

  2. Furries.
I still wanted to try it out because clearly I need to make an Appleseed Room to show how "with it" and "hep" I am but my Boot Camp partition is in a melted-down state, and the thing is Windows-only right now. (Very happy that Project X is backed up off-site... yeesh.)

I know IBM has a strong Second Life presence. Is that something Appleseed is doing?

Appleseed hasn't done anything cool anywhere. It doesn't even have a Facebook presence, beyond my own very faint one there.

The next time I feel like sinking some time into a real marketing push, there's a lot of readily exploitable online turf waiting for it. (Though I will probably favor places more friendly to passive marketing than SL, since it's not like I can pay someone to hang out there all day.)

Don't worry about not having a Windows machine ready to run the thing. You aren't missin shit.

It runs as slow as VRML over a 28.8 connection, which is appropriate since it pretty much is VRML but gussied up and given a Sims-like interface, which TOTALLY FUCKS SHIT UP when you try to use it.

This may be a pilot program or beta or something, but right now, hoo boy, it's got Fail written all over it.
