After an optimistic evening of sending mail to people with room-needed ads, I now find myself tossing and turning with second thoughts about the whole matter. It took awhile to realize that the relaxed vacancy rate applies to me, too; and lo, a quick check of the rental listings on bostonapartments.com shows lots of hits for this area, many of which are $1,000 or less. There is a lot of "available: now". Suddenly, looking for a 1BR with less than two months to go doesn't seem so insane anymore.

Maybe what put two and two together for me was a sushi dindin with M tonight wherein she off-handedly mentioned her intentions to get a 1BR in metro Boston somewhere by June, but hasn't started looking yet. M is one of the most responsible, do-no-wrong people I know when it comes to home management, so if she's not worried, then I wonder what I'm doing here... (I think I'll mail her, coz I don't think she reads this, yok yok)

My current landlords are coming over to inspect the place tomorrow (just to make sure we haven't trashed the joint), and I'll ask if I can have maybe another week before making a final-final decision. And I'll make some calls first thing in the morning, just to confirm that things are as they seem.

My Chinese astrological sign is the waffle.

Would that be sweet and sour waffles? Spicy Sichuan waffles? Waffles with duck sauce?

...mmm... waffles...

Scallion waffles would work. (There was a good sourdough ham-and-cheese waffle recipe in a recent Cooking Light, so the concept is sound.)

(Since I can't currently reply to Rikchik's comment directly....)

Scallion waffles sound good... dipping sauce on the side, or thickened and poured over the waffles?

I'd say thickened in a gravy boat, so you can pour them over or put them on the side. The ham-and-cheese waffles were with a dijon mustard / maple syrup mix. Yum. Scallion pancakes are usually with a dark sauce like soy, right?

The dipping sauce I last had with scallion pancakes was dark, a bit too salty (perhaps I'm used to low-sodium soy sauce?), with sesame seeds in it, and probably some sweetener, too. Easy enough to thicken with corn starch for pouring over waffles :-)

Is moving to a 1BR your top choice? If so, go for it; but if you like where you are, it occurs to me that another way to use the relaxed vacancy thing to your advantage would be to discuss it with your current landlords -- maybe they'd lower your current rent and then you'd get more inquiries. The fact that you haven't had many nibbles might make them concerned about being able to fill the apt at that rent after you'd gone.

I think, after a year and a half otherwise, I would prefer living by myself, now that I can afford to. Having nice housemates keeps me from loneliness, I guess, but more often than not I don't feel at all social, and stay sealed in my room with the fan on for white noise, usually emerging just to watch TV or play video games. :)

You raise good point about landlords inheriting my unease. I'll just fill them in frankly about the whole situation. If they say "Raar, no, you can't leave now!" and show me fine print that I signed under, I'll shrug and stay (unhappily). But it's still a month and a half until the lease is up, and they can search full-time. Well, we'll see.
