Did the bedroom today. Broken desk, rusty metal bookshelf, and cheap wire "bureau" all assembled (previously stacked in pieces around the apartment), and filled with their appropriate content (previously heaped and mounded on my bedroom floor). All examples of functional but horribly ugly furniture I purchased during my "freelance" period last year.

Determined that the strange, sweet smell that has permeated my room since I moved in came from a half-unwrapped bar of deodorant soap that had spilled from a box and lay on an air vent in the floor. I think: ah, there's a very bad IF puzzle in this.

For some reason I don't think I have yet noted that my sailor pal sent me a nice housewarming gift, which arrived at my old address on moving day (two weeks ago): a handsome wooden bowl, a Hawaiian-themed coffee mug, and some macadamia chocolates, shipped from her base at Pearl Harbor. I've been drinking tea from the mug nigh every night, so that's good.

This was probably partially in thanks for the copy of Nutshell I surprise-threw at her, after reëstablishing email contact a couple of months ago, when I learned that she had just gotten a new PowerBook. Of all the books I sent to people, that was the one that traveled farthest, I think.

At work last week, someone snuck into my cube and stuck a PROPERTY OF U.S. GOVERNMENT barcode sticker on my own PowerBook. So, I assume that the monies that went into buying the computer I'm typing this entry into came from the National Cancer Institute, a dot-gov, and one of the ICCB's principal funding sources. Your tax dollars at work. I think I'll play me some Pac-Man when I'm done with this, on my super-expensive government computer, bwa haaaa.

Initiated contact last week with a former colleague from UMaine, who has started to become a regular poster to rec.games.int-fiction. Because I can barely remember my life before my college graduation (which sounds like the set-up to a lame joke about my salad days of youthful binge drinking or something, but it's actually just because I really can't remember, for various reasons) I had to make a guess who she was, and soon knew I got it at least half-right, cuz she wrote back. That was nice.
