Called my mom (with Ricky in background) and filled them in. As is usually the case when trying to predict my family's reactions, I got it wrong; rather than panic, they're rolling their eyes over what a dope she is no doubt being. Learned that niece's car is a loaner from a Cape Cod garage that is fixing her actual car, and she may already have been late in returning it when she started out later then she planned for my house. So, perhaps she said "foo" as it grew ever later and she fled capewards?

Mom is now going to try calling niece's mom on the cape. (I got a little angry when she suggested that I be the one to call, because it would be too awkward for her, implying that it would be less so for me. Unfortunately started growling about being up until 3 cold-calling police dispatchers. There is tension.)

(To those not interested: sorry I keep going on about this, but it's what I'm obsessing about right now, and I've got enough other people concerned (for good or ill) that this is the most efficient way to update everyone.)

(I have in fact received much support through these troubles, and thank everyone for it, really and truly.)

I've been worrying about this all day. It's good to know that a rather reasonable explanation has presented itself.

I'm glad there's a less-than-scary possible resolution; I hope you find out definitely soon.

As LJ obsessions go, the concrete welfare of another human being
has *got* to be worthwhile.

I have been following the story with some interest. Glad to
hear that there is some potential good news.
