It's no big deal for me, since all my hosting and service needs are met off-site, and I've been living quite happily without a static IP at home for almost a year now. Still: sigh. If we go to cable, it will be a connectivity downgrade for my friends, and that makes me feel bad.
Whatever happens, we'll still have a wonderful geek house. Yesterday we brought home a G4 cube and an Indigo, both on loan from Noah's workplace. I installed the developer preview of Mac OS 10.2 on the cube, but waded through five pages of NDAs to get there, so of this I can say no more. I can say it'll make the book better, both to have a better idea of what the OS'll look like when it comes out, and to now be able to experiment with networking Macs together.
