So, it has come to our attention that DSL is not going to be an option after all. Yes, I know: shocker. It looks like Somerville's phone lines are just too rotten for it, no matter where you go. It's got my fellow Morgudlians very upset with the world, or at least with this town. They were looking forward to hosting services from home, but that's not happening now. Noah is now getting price quotes on T-1s, but we're all, of course, thinking about how we'll live with RCN or AT&T cable.

It's no big deal for me, since all my hosting and service needs are met off-site, and I've been living quite happily without a static IP at home for almost a year now. Still: sigh. If we go to cable, it will be a connectivity downgrade for my friends, and that makes me feel bad.

Whatever happens, we'll still have a wonderful geek house. Yesterday we brought home a G4 cube and an Indigo, both on loan from Noah's workplace. I installed the developer preview of Mac OS 10.2 on the cube, but waded through five pages of NDAs to get there, so of this I can say no more. I can say it'll make the book better, both to have a better idea of what the OS'll look like when it comes out, and to now be able to experiment with networking Macs together.
