Amused to learn from comments attached to this Slashdot book review that the term "fish", in a professional poker context, is not a Tim Powers invention. The book sounds really worthwhile, actually; I liked the poker-playing setting of Last Call and would like to learn more about its place in reality. (I'm still not sure if the capitalization of "Poker" throughout Last Call is a pure Powers conceit or not.)

I note that "bemused" and "nonplussed" are similar not just in their synonymosity, but in their each self-containedly suggesting that they should mean other things. (I often see them misused to mean "amused" and "unimpressed", respectively, and take note of this probably because I used to think that's what they meant, and still feel foolish about it for some reason.)

One word-loving friend once told me of his fondness for "sessile", which he thinks is the highest English can offer in the class of words that feel like their own antonyms.

They should have made Lt. Riker (the demoted clone of Cmdr. Riker created in one of those wonderful transporter goofs) a regular character for at least a few additional episodes, but no more than a season. I haven't seen this episode before.

I just learned from an ad that TNN (which takes a break from rasslin' shows to show ST:TNG for a few hours every day) considers itself a network for men. Now I feel vaguely creepy watching it. whee

There is apparently a new Scooby-Doo cartoon series.

I like the music better. I cannot see the screen very well because my glasses are elsewhere. The male voice actors seem to have carried over from the original series, but not the ladies. Velma's lost a lot of weight and I'm not sure how I feel about that, but her hair is mussier, which is cute. And Fred has been doing a lot of upper-body or something and looks even more like Roger Ramjet. And Daphne is wearing a dress I once saw in Tello's which I thought looked like Star Trek:TOS green-go-go-girl getup, and I laughed at it, ha-ha.

The pacing is a lot more manic than the original series. Of SD, not ST.

I'm blogging because I've actually been working on a research project while watching TV, but needed a break, so you get to read all this garbage. Feedle-dee!
