"I cast magic missile," says Donald Rumsfeld, as jmac adds:

That was quite the thing last night, hey? A most tense and excellent league championship series, if observed from a disinterested viewpoint. Which I lack, alas.

Around the top of the eighth I was so tired of refreshing boston.com like it was my LJ friends page that I walked to the Diesel to get a decaf. Glad I did, because I took joy in seeing people pressed to the various bars' doors and windows to watch the TVs within. (The Diesel had a TV, too.) Walking back I ran into something sudden and beautiful: a Domino's employee, middle-aged guy, talking to someone I couldn't see who was standing in the kitchen. He was saying, "Well, he got a base hit... that means he goes to first base. The team scores whenever someone can run all the way around! Now, there's nine innings, and..."

I nearly lost it. Seriously. Was sniffling 'til I got to my front door.

And all the headlines are comisseratory today. This town is my home.

"national pastime"

I'm not a baseball fan myself, but have certainly been entertained by the actions and behavior of my coworkers, family and friends over the last couple weeks. What is the big appeal? Honestly, the
game itself isn't that exciting. Maybe society is just thirsty
for some national pride? I don't object, myself: better to gain it that way than from waging war on the middle east.

I enjoyed the closing quote at the end of this morning's NPR report on the game. A Boston fan: "And now, we can't even cheer for the Cubs. Excuse my French, but both teams in the series suck."

great take
