Yesterday was a great day, hanging until the wee hours with the Freaks & co., meeting more folks' families, eating a lot. Worked on Volity until battery went away, too. (Good way to force yourself to be social when visiting friends? Don't bring your laptop's power cord.) I enjoy working in a comfy setting with other people around, I think. Hmm... should experiment at libraries and such.

[Volity status: things are most definitely on-target for a semi-public announcement and intro coming with the new year. Am just starting to try roping talented locals into the vortex; having a power-brunch with a Java geek tomorrow, and pinging local entrepreneurs about things. Good stuff.]

Now I feel like buying some Game Boy games, after rediscovering this little toy, and discovering how fun it is to play on the T (especially Mario Kart, especially if you're sitting on a sideways seat), and its usefulness for taking instant, minutes-long breaks between work sessions. According to snopes, mall-traffic today isn't any worse that any other "official" XMess shopping day. And does Buy Nothing Day actually count if you're buying cool junk for yourself? Naaaah.

I dunno what I'll do regarding actual present-obtainment for others this year, really. Last January I went a little crazy because of [livejournal.com profile] cthulhia's epiphany party (plus the fact I was newly financially stable), buying lots of games and books for people in that social circle, while getting nothing for folks in my other ones (except for the copy of the LotR board game I bought for housemates (still in my apt since neither claimed it after their breakup)). I have a feeling I'll scale back operations this year. Maybe. I dunno. We'll see.

[Subtext: if I got you something last year, and you feel obliged to return the favor for this reason alone, then I tell you now that you needn't. I give gifts on the spur of the moment because it makes me happy, and I expect nothing in return. I put all my selfishness into the act of giving. It's a good deal if you can swing it, let me tell you.]

Less nervous now about my upcoming birthday. Meeting with (much of) the not-quite-named-yet mystery hunt team last night, came out that my 30th would be that same weekend. And so it passes out of my hands; the celebration will involve running around trying to solve puzzles while not sleeping for an entire weekend. And nipping over to Arisia now and then, to boot. Ah yes.

But, my parents want to have a big celebration, too, for them as much as me. True fact: when they were considering the fate of fetal proto-jmac, an item in the con-column was the fact they were both over 40, which, according to my mom today, seemed really wicked old at the time, and they certainly couldn't even conceive of being 70-something when this kid turned 30. But, lo: here we all are.

We'll figure something out later.

Well, speaking for myself, don't buy me a present. ;) And if the Hobbit buys you a present -- which she might if the inspiration strikes -- it's only because she loves buying people presents, not because she wants one from you.

If I may ask, what's Volity? Or should I wait for the new year?

It is a new secret weapon to be used against John Ashcroft and the other evil doers!
