My laptop's in the shop today getting a new screen, maybe a whole new case. (I couldn't put it off anymore after the second hinge broke, forcing me top prop the screen against something while I worked, or hold it up with one hand.) On my Win2K box now, which I hardly ever use, and so communication with me is spotty, at least until I find a IMAP-over-SSL client for this thing. (Suggestions welcome.) And I can't get AIM to work right, bah. But I have my phone, and I'm on Jabber. (I don't know if I've mentioned my Jabber ID here yet. It is jmac@volity.net. You can consider this my permanent JID.)

For IMAP-over-SSL, you could certainly use Pooka.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I'll need another: how do I make Java thingies work on Windows? (On a Mac you double-click the jar file, and stuff happens. No such luck here.)

Do you have a JRE installed?

if you need to get a new version of java, go here. then install it. then you should just be able to 2xclick on the jar file and have it run.

i need to update my install and run page, i know...

Yeah, I followed the links from the Pooka page to Sun's JWS page, which advised that I install the latest JRE. So I did. Do I need to reboot now or something?

Possibly. Or restart Explorer. Or check the associations for the .jar file type.

I finally just got it to work, for Windows 2000... You can't just use the "Open With..." dialog, you have to go into Windows Explorer, select menu item "Tools/Folder Options", select the "File Types" tab, select "JAR" in the big chooser box, hit "Advanced", select the "open" action, hit "Edit...", then "Browse...", find "javaw.exe", then add " -jar %1" to the "Application used to perform action:" text box. I think that last step is the key, because "Open With..." doesn't know to use the "-jar" option.

I have no idea why the default J2SE SDK installer doesn't do this. Maybe it did do this but somewhere along the line I broke it. Whatever. It works now. I'm happy(ish).
