Trolling my electronical friends

Having found all the parts to my Atari 2600 (and my dozens of game cartridges), I'd like to get it set up in my living room, next to my PS2. Something in the power->system->switchbox->TV chain isn't working; getting no response at all. I last saw it working in early 2001, three apartments ago.
Any advice on how I can start isolating the problem, by determining whether the system is even powering up? It doesn't have any sort of visual power indicator. I'm imagining there's some way to see if electricity's getting to it anyway? A visit or two to Radio Shack is acceptable for this project, if necessary. (I know nothing of practical electronics, so my whole conjecture may be silly...)
