Happy conversation in the video game store at the Pru. (I went there to visit a fellow I met at a party a while ago, but it was his day off. Also, I was expecting it to be a game-game store. I picked up a couple of used PS2 titles anyway.) The players are GIRL, BOY, and CLERK.
GIRL: [Playing with Game Boy demo unit at the counter.] Samus looks like a girl.
BOY: Samus is a girl, has always been a girl.
CLERK: That must have warped many young minds, this revelation.
BOY: Yeah, I couldn't believe it! What kinda girl runs around shooting people!
GIRL: [Making a face at the Game Boy, which has made a series of sad noises.] What kind of girl dies when she falls into the water.
CLERK: That's only at the beginning.
GIRL: My friend is stronger than that... she just won a swimming meet.
CLERK: Well, she must have been wearing her Gravity Suit.

I'm currently enjoying Kingdom Hearts and Einhander (both by square). Have you played these?

No... I lost the patience for most CRPGs a while ago, even though they were once my favorite kind of game. Where once I loved the feeling of pushing little guys around, carefully cultivating them as they got more and more powerful until they could finally topple the Great Withering Evil at the end, today the process feels like work, work that I could better apply in actually improving myself, and my projects. I usually don't buy into the "Duh duh duh why are you doing X on a computer when you could do it for real" class of argument, but in this case, speaking personally, I feel it applies.

So, um... no, I haven't. Except I played Kingdom Hearts at a friend's house a little. I mostly remember the part where you beat the crap out of little girls with wooden swords, ha ha. Disney! I also remember an editorial I read recently that declared the game's storyline to be an allegory for WDC's leaderhsip woes. King Mickey is missing! The Heartless have taken over!

Why do you ask? :)

Just to get more of an idea of your tastes in videogames; seems we both dig arcade classics.

I thought the same thing about Disney in KH (that's no flying undead monkey-- it's Michael Eisner!) Mickey et al. should have been on the forces of darkness team too IMHO.

I haven't got to the stage of rejecting CRPGs entirely yet (I'm still hung up on the game worlds being simple/flashy/puzzling/you-are-the-chosen-one), but I know what you mean.
