You know, I just played Internet HSGF again, and: network golf is kind of stupid. You just happen to be playing through a course at the same time as some other folks; nothing you do can help or hinder your opponents' performance. It's still kind of fun to see the leaderboard between holes and know that the scores belong to actual people and not random-number generators (as is the case in the single-player game), and it's nice to chat with folks while waiting for the slower opponents to finish up, but that's about all you get.

Yes, it took me three play sessions to realize this. genius

I was kinda wondering... Real golf is pretty much "multiplayer solitaire" too. There is some psychological gamesmanship that goes on, though (related to how much risk you need to take with any particular shot), and you can also get a course read from the player before you, e.g. if his putt is on a similar line to yours. But it didn't sound like that comes into play in the computer version.

Well, with this game you get to see the read when playing 'versus mode' (online or locally), where players take turns and get to watch each other, and I suppose you can try psyching each other out if you're playing on the same console. :) But the tournament mode is just solitaire, as you say.

In the hot shots game I have for psx, you can push a button to jeer at your opponent.
