Your Move Games had in-stock copies of both Battle Cry and its WWII-themed update, Memoir '44. My dad would like either theme, but I went with the former anyway. And I just spent the last three hours popping well over 100 wee soldiers out of plastic runners and sticking flag decals on them. Unfortunately, I got the hang of the decal work about halfway through, so the Confederacy's flags look way better than the Union's. Sorry Mr. President. Do all of Hasbro/Avalon Hill's games have this some-assembly-required ethic? Ugh...
I will say this for Axis & Allies: it has gotten me interested in poking around wargames, which I should like, since I like Civ so much (and Civ is very much a war boardgame). But the magic things about Civ:
I like Battle Cry because it is wargamey but with a tactical range constrained by luck (your actions on any turn being limited to the cards you happen to hold), a game mechanic I really enjoy when done well. And games are short, which I also really enjoy. Hope th' old man does too...
Now time for homework.

- It's always my turn. Or anyway, the computerized opponents don't dawdle when it's their turn. (And they're even faster if you shut off their movement animations!)
- After I hit my personal per-session time limit, I can save my game and put it away for a while, and none of my opponents complain!
