Hats

I got a new hat, and it's nice. I used my big brain to figure that the giant Burlington Coat Factory store just down the street from my house could probably set me up, and indeed this is probably the nicest hat I've ever gotten myself. A simple black woolen cap, and inexpensive, yet seems in form and function a step above the generic stretchy synthetic things I buy every winter. Hope I can hold onto this one... Well, if I don't, at least I know where to go.

They actually had a rather nice selection of seasonal men's toppers, and I almost got a more expensive fuzzy hat that reminded me of the "It's sable!" Seinfeld episode, but I concluded that it didn't offer adequate ear protection.

Someday I will try to become a regular hat-wearer. Maybe. I'm not certain that I'd be able to make it work, without advertising my dorkiness; my personal observation suggests that it's harder than it looks, especially here in Nurdville USA. Too often I see a younger man with a fedora and my first thought (taking in everything else in his dress and poise) is "aha, obvious SCAdian!" or whatever. That there's a fella who hand-paints his miniatures, if you know what I'm saying. Of the men I know personally, I seem to recall that [livejournal.com profile] cnoocy (and maybe [livejournal.com profile] temvald??) does the hat thing well, and I'm not sure that anyone else really tries... maybe I'd need to shave first. Hmf.

Nice hat, you fucking loser.

Speaking of which, did you notice the reference to Super Monkey Ball in BoingBoing today?

I enjoyed that particular hat during the brief time I wore it, too. I never got any static over it, but I was apparently hard to recognize, and confused people.

bwa ha ha ha

I'd mail this to my old shire mailing list.

My ex was a fedora wearing miniature painter.

(However, *I* look smashing in a fedora.)

Both of us wear hats. [livejournal.com profile] temvald's head gets very cold in the winter without any natural insulation. Mine is mostly for keeping the sun out of my eyes. But there's a part of me that thinks I look goofy in it. It may help that I've been wearing one for long enough not to worry about it anymore.

if i could get away with it, i would wear a hat all the time, like a rosalind-russell-in-"his girl friday" kind of hat with feathers and all kinds of angular weirdness (no fake fruit). i used to like berets, but now they have a weird monica lewisnky stigma to them.

i do think that some men can carry off a fedora, and i don't naturally assume all of them are dorks. most of them, but not all. there are other kinds of hats, though.

Hats...

I've had the option of wearing a hat once/twice a week over the past several months.

Chef's hat? Nope.

Ball cap? Yup, most times.

Bowler? Once or twice when I forgot the ball cap. For an unexplainable reason[1], I've had a bowler and a top hat in the back window of my car for many months. (Side note: this re-enforces the dark-blue sedan with strange "those could be blue lights Bob!" blobs in the back window look... which improves the long term odds of achieving Mach-JLT.) multiple folks (female and male) said they like this look. I had complete fun wearing it. Very silly. One person wandered back in with a flat beanie-eque hat - which looked fabulous - but it's not a look I could pull off - I tried in college. Erm.

Santa Hat? (Red, with a big white fuffy pompom on the top..) Once. This achieved much laughter. If I wore it in January I would likely be worried about. June? People would cross the street...

[1] A friend got married - all us guys wore top hats (but no canes). While buying a top hat they also had bowler hats. Think Thomas Crown Affair. _Yeah_. *grooves along to the Nina Simone Sinnerman remix from that movie which is playing in the ipod of my mind.*

(part 2)
Burlington Coat Factory is a _great_ idea. Thanks! I need some more gloves since I'm using my backup (lives in the car for working on the car, leather work gloves) pair - lent out the good warm gloves (from Filenes Basement in the great city of Boston). Need to get more warm gloves and a _warm_ hat. Hmmm..
