They actually had a rather nice selection of seasonal men's toppers, and I almost got a more expensive fuzzy hat that reminded me of the "It's sable!" Seinfeld episode, but I concluded that it didn't offer adequate ear protection.
Someday I will try to become a regular hat-wearer. Maybe. I'm not certain that I'd be able to make it work, without advertising my dorkiness; my personal observation suggests that it's harder than it looks, especially here in Nurdville USA. Too often I see a younger man with a fedora and my first thought (taking in everything else in his dress and poise) is "aha, obvious SCAdian!" or whatever. That there's a fella who hand-paints his miniatures, if you know what I'm saying. Of the men I know personally, I seem to recall that

Date: 2004-12-20 09:56 pm (UTC)i do think that some men can carry off a fedora, and i don't naturally assume all of them are dorks. most of them, but not all. there are other kinds of hats, though.
Hats...
Date: 2004-12-21 02:35 pm (UTC)Chef's hat? Nope.
Ball cap? Yup, most times.
Bowler? Once or twice when I forgot the ball cap. For an unexplainable reason[1], I've had a bowler and a top hat in the back window of my car for many months. (Side note: this re-enforces the dark-blue sedan with strange "those could be blue lights Bob!" blobs in the back window look... which improves the long term odds of achieving Mach-JLT.) multiple folks (female and male) said they like this look. I had complete fun wearing it. Very silly. One person wandered back in with a flat beanie-eque hat - which looked fabulous - but it's not a look I could pull off - I tried in college. Erm.
Santa Hat? (Red, with a big white fuffy pompom on the top..) Once. This achieved much laughter. If I wore it in January I would likely be worried about. June? People would cross the street...
[1] A friend got married - all us guys wore top hats (but no canes). While buying a top hat they also had bowler hats. Think Thomas Crown Affair. _Yeah_. *grooves along to the Nina Simone Sinnerman remix from that movie which is playing in the ipod of my mind.*

Date: 2004-12-21 02:38 pm (UTC)Burlington Coat Factory is a _great_ idea. Thanks! I need some more gloves since I'm using my backup (lives in the car for working on the car, leather work gloves) pair - lent out the good warm gloves (from Filenes Basement in the great city of Boston). Need to get more warm gloves and a _warm_ hat. Hmmm..
