More Carnivale stuff

I don't think I've been into a TV show this much since "Twin Peaks", for real.
* What was Iris burning at the end?
* It didn't occur to me until the end of the episode that it's been only the snake-dancer (whose name I can't remember) who has been seeing the ghosts. That's pretty cool. It fits, because of the strange relationship with death she has via Ben's intervention at the end of season 1. (And this is why her snakes are acting up, too? Is this a pointer to folklore that I don't know about?)
It's significant that she saw the ghost of the fortune teller after seeing Lodz, as she knew that she was dead, and she can put two and two together. (Assuming she chooses to believe in ghosts, anyway.) Then again, her concluding that Lodz is dead wouldn't matter much while everyone else also feels that way based on non-supernatural evidence, so it's not clear what direction this twist is ultimately headed.

dougo reminded me that I was actually unsure of the show through the whole first season, which were pretty difficult to watch, with one bad thing after another befalling the wretched characters. This season the story seems much more driven, and the misfortunes more obstacles than just torments. I really like the show now!
* Justin has finally crossed the line and done an unequivocal Bad Thing all by himself. It's kind of disappointing; I was really hoping that he would continue to act only as a catalyst, himself technically innocent while horrible evils swirled in his wake. Oh well, maybe I can make that guy the tragic villain for my own epic, ho ho.

Date: 2005-02-02 07:47 pm (UTC)The reviewer on the Television Without Pity site mentioned that Apollonia's shadow was following Sofie's shadow down the road when we first see her zombieing away from the carnival (season 2, ep 2). I missed that bit the first time, but nice touch!!
I wasn't sure what Iris was burning either...
Interesting point about Justin!
