I don't actually foresee taking the effort to read them (and it is a lot of effort -- the things are huge, five little "phone books" typical of serial-manga format) because I find it too depressing for words.

I thought of pretending that it takes place in some near-future election setting, but that's not realistic, because nobody mentions 9/11. It would have to be strictly alternate-universe stuff. And, again: just too depressing to think about.
