I've stopped responding to my doorbell when I'm not expecting anyone. I state this more as self-observation than as policy.
It's usually spam. Even when it isn't, I usually get irritated that I'm suddenly expected to *poof* become social no matter what I was just doing. Add to this my case of Advanced Bachelor Syndrome and what this does to the appearance of my apartment, at least when I don't have a few minutes' lead time to pick up the mountain of junk mail from the entryway, tuck away the piles of socks, put out most of the trash fires, etc.
So: because you and I are pals, I'd love to have you over. But, please call first. If you don't have my number, ask me what it is sometime. (It's actually in a logical spot on my website if you care to poke around.)
