I am really quite curious exactly how Bush is planning on "touring" the disaster area. Wouldn't his safety in doing so be akin to touring the streets of Baghdad, at this point?

Either this is going to be a pathetic token gesture, or he's going to get himself killed.

I'm thinking Operation Helicopter is indicated.

That was an obscure Naked Lunch reference, btw--it's apparently the way that Bushland supporters think about New Orleans now.

Looks like he did go the helicopter route, but not to New Orleans, at least not yet.

And he still can't stop smirking.

I am gettng the sense that some areas of the city are not completely life-threatening, that some areas are (relatively) secure. So probably that's where he'll go. Though it still seems pretty daft to fly into an area where people have been firing on helicopters. Maybe he's going to tour some area outside of the city that's always been laid waste?

Or both. Don't rule out "both".

Maybe they'll just use a greenscreen and some CGI.

btw, who is the imposing-looking gentleman in your icon? My random guess is Warren Harding.

*raises hand* I vote for killed.

(But a lot of good my vote did last time.)

Yeah, they're pretty peeved down there. Check out this MP3 of Mayor Nagin giving a piece of his mind. He's talking in a way that under most circumstances would get him crucified, but I don't think anyone can blame him for this. I heard a brief excerpt from this on NPR yesterday morning and cheered his honesty. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] continuoboy for posting a link to the full interview.
