Why you hate olives

Zarf just shared Olives for the Perplexed with me, after I ate an olive at a party on Saturday and was confused as to why I found it complex and delicious when all the olives I have eaten heretofore have been flat and awful.

I like all kinds of olives, even the black sliced ones out of a can. I like olive oil, too. mmmm....olives!

They looked different. Could say "also was drinking" but closer to the truth is that I want to like all foods so their unusual appearance was probably enough to get me to try one.

Probably most different was that these were whole olives, with a dish set out for pits. I have only had the pitted sort, or the kind with the mush put in place of the pits.

Ah. that makes sense.

I also have never liked the ubiquitous black olive. I grew up on the green ones with mush in place of the pits. We always had a jar of them in our fridge (and my folks didn't ever serve martinis, so they were there simply for snacking on). I liked them as a kid, but as an adult, found that I didn't.

However from time to time I have encountered fancier olives, pits intact, and I have tried them. But, haven't liked those either, so now I don't even try.

Funnily enough, I love olives and couldn't understand why I haven't enjoyed them since leaving Europe. I suppose that explains it!
