Because I knew he was a chemist, I asked someone in my local RPG group if maybe he had some insight on this position I'm getting interviewed for in a couple of weeks, hoping that he could give me some pointers for further research. Naturally, it turns out that he knows and has worked with the head of this particular lab, and hey, why not use him as a reference?

Man alive. If I get this job, it will be the second major positive career direction scored as a result of my joining a role-playing game group. (Joy's 1998 D&D campaign back in Bangor introduced me to people who, a few months later, invited me into my first programming position.)
