I just figured out what happened by somebody driving by saying WOOOOO
I read it as a validation that the 2004 win wasn't a fluke, which is nice. I'm ready for them to go back to being tragic heartbreakers for another 80 years if they want.
this is the 3rd time tonight i've heard this sentiment expressed by a red sox fan, and i have to say that suddenly as a result, for the first time ever, i think i might be understanding red sox fandom-- and finding myself completely endeared to it. hearing red sox fans say it's fantastic they're winning, but it's okay if they stop now-- i get it. it has taken me years, but i get it. i love it. i love you guys!
and in the meantime, congrats on winning the world series :) :)
Seriously, we were molded in a crucible of hope and despair, and I honestly have no idea how to route for a winning team. mildmannered said, in 2004, "I almost hope they don't win -- we don't know how to root for a winning team" and I was angry with her at the time but she was right. We did need to win twice to prove that it wasn't a fluke, but it's a lot less fun to root for a team that you know is going to win, that you know is going to sweep, that you know is going to end the season with seven consecutive wins.
Rooting for a team that has been breaking your heart for over 80 years? That, I know how to do.
I tried being a Cubs fan but just can't bring myself to care.
(That being said, rooting for this team is so much easier because they are all so wonderful. Manny, Wakefield, Varitek, Schilling: good people, fun people. And the young hotshots: Papelbon, Ellsbury -- so much raw talent there.)

as a yankees fan i can certainly agree!

and again, as a yankees fan, i can CERTAINLY agree-- this is why i've been wandering aimlessly since 2001 and have lost my interest in the game. after the fall of 2001, which was a time during which i was so proud of my team even though they didn't win the series, the asses in management busted MY TEAM apart, literally plucked 6 or 7 of my favorite guys-- the little guys, the guys with the unimpressive records but the great personalities and the magic touch-- out of the order and threw them in the trash, and began to replace them with GROSS people like jason giambi and a-rod and yuck yuck yuck and it wasn't a *team* anymore. it broke my heart, really.
i think for me, coming to boston when i did, new to the emotions of red sox nation (and also missing new york at a hard time to be missing new york-- september of 2001), all i felt around me was anger, bitterness, and whining. it seemed more like red sox fans hated the yankees than that they loved the red sox, which didn't seem to me like a way to choose a team, and it was little hard to take, especially the suggestion that the yankees always won because they're a big money team beating up on the little guy (the red sox were never exactly a small money team or a little guy). but now, the bitterness and the whining have lifted, and i can see that OF COURSE, there has been love underneath it all the time! and i GET baseball love. especially for a team of characters, and a team that breaks your heart most of the time. it's such a relief, actually. the bitterness/whining really was overwhelming to the uninitiated. now if it ever happens again, i'll know it's sitting on top of a base of love.
for the record, i've been routing against the yankees for the past few years. they've become some kind of mutant gross creature that i can't relate to, and i'm glad they suck. (but i still love them and hope they find their soul again.) (and yes, i was always a little embarrassed by the money they throw around and the amount they win. but i can't help it! i fell in love with new york and the yankees. you can't help who you love.)
i'm so glad the curse is over and the sox won twice. it's the right thing for baseball. and baseball is the greatest sport in the world. :)
You should know that Ellsbury flashed the sign in your icon after a game-saving catch (it was headed over the wall for a tie game) in the ninth inning.
Strictly speaking, he was giving the traditional baseball sign for two outs, which you will observe players doing all the time if you look for it. But the way he did it had a devil horns kind of feel.
Heh. I was speculating that if the Red Sox keep this kind of trend up, serious Sox fans simply won't know what to do with themselves. And the other comments to that entry seem to support that suspicion :)

Date: 2007-10-29 04:32 am (UTC)Welcome to my life.
Seriously, the only way I learn about major sporting events around here is by loud noises.
Three nights ago, jet plane burns by low over my apartment. I had no idea that was for the start of the World Series until someone told me.
