I watched Patriot Games with [livejournal.com profile] classicaljunkie last night. I enjoyed it in theaters when I saw it with my dad ~15 years ago, but now it's just ridiculous, basically a slasher/monster movie painted to look like political intrigue.

The scenes I remembered most remain poignant anyway, and I discovered some new ones. My new hobby is to bellow I WILL FUCKING DESTROY YOU! I WILL MAKE IT MY MISSION IN LIFE to someone different once per week. Maybe I'll start with the neighbor's dog and work my way up.

Maybe the people in the prior post (whom I will not say more here about)?

This is, naturally, what I was thinking about (since it's pretty much all I'm thinking about lately).

as far as i am concerned there is only one jack ryan and it's alec baldwin. the other two can fuck right off.

i haven't seen that movie in ages, but sean bean gets the shaft, no? there's one twist involving richard harris and the chippy that i really enjoy. oh richard harris. i am a sucker for old british booze hounds.

Yeah. Bean basically plays a psychotic serial killer who runs around putting holes into people until the protagonist finally and inevitably gets a clear shot at him. The fact that he's an IRA agent and all the other stuff basically doesn't matter at all, and the story almost comes out and says as much.

My memory of the movie was a lot more intriguing than it actually is, on re-watch.

ah, this is the same premise when bean played 006 in goldeneye. gotta say, he's better in that one. could be the whole black on black suit thing. yeah, patriot games isn't one i need to see again.

Wait, didn't Sean Bean get the shaft in the same way in Ronin? He's there, he's there, and then he kind of just leaves, perhaps because he wasn't very interesting. The man has got to get a better agent.

Incidentally, the "I will fucking destroy you" could get you in trouble. I recommend instead picking someone and then following them around and looming over them while shouting "IGNORE ME!"

getting the shaft is what it means to be sean bean; goldeneye, patriot games, ronin, fellowship of the ring. i have long sought a movie wherein he at least is alive by the end.

he's alive in the end? i thought he died. he's arrested or something though, right? seems it wouldn't be a sean bean movie if he didn't get screwed figuratively speaking somehow. heaven forbid he win out, get the girl, and solve the crime.

I think he got arrested but was otherwise okay. Maybe eventually he'll be in a new movie where everything is fine with him in the end. Checking imdb, I am reminded he was in the Silent Hill movie and was okay in that one, but he was never in much danger in that movie.

Submarine movie

Also we watched Red October a month or two ago (for she got herself the Jack Ryan boxed set) and it, on the other hand, holds up quite well.

"Red October" was one of the first movies we ever downloaded as a preview at the Internet company I worked at in Colorado.

I can still here Jordan (Owner of ISP, boss type) playing it. Again and again and again. "The cold war is over. But the weapons remain... "

We were thrilled at the quality of the video that we could download over a 56k circuit....

my old boss at a non profit (but really for profit) foundation for a famous artist enjoyed playing elton john's "this train don't stop" over and over and over again. you totally win because that's a cool ass movie.

It really is awesome forever. True story: my friend took Intensive Russian with me in college because he wanted to be able to sing the Soviet anthem along with Sean Connery and know what he was singing. We used to walk around intoning, "It reminds me of the heady days of Sputnik and Yuri Gagarin..." in an inappropriate Scottish brogue.
