you know, professional mover fees may sound like a lot of money at first, but compared to the loss of income incurred from not being able to work for an entire week while you box up and then transport an entire five years of your life? It may actually be a pretty good deal.

Next time.

(this is also to say nothing about all the actual money-costs you pay anyway, like the moving van parking permit I an now waiting in line to pay for a second time. Because I packed the first permit I bought. Because I am not a professional mover.)

you didn't need to take the week off.
also, movers get paid more than most programmers per hour. So, even having them for 5 hours of the actual move is steep. And, you have to tip them.

And, if you have them get the permits, there's a mark-up of more than 200%.

The cost of using professional movers, plus a day's worth of hiring a professional organizer (which wasn't all that necessary, but it was helpful, and she needed the money more than I do) ultimately cost me more than I typically make in 2 weeks.

Somehow, the pro movers took longer than friends helping. I haven't figured that part out yet.

I totally did need the whole week! I literally put three full work-days into packing, and yesterday was the move, and today is the aftermath.

(thank you tons btw. Real thankyou post to follow when I have a real keyboard )

As long as you're moving in-town, what you probably want are semi-pro movers: that is, instead of a Moving Company that'll box up everything you own and shlep it for mere tens of thousands of dollars, go with someone like Wicked Smart Movers. You do the packing, and rent and drive the moving truck; and they'll do all of the carrying in and out. We loved 'em.

It is my opinion that Gentle Giant is worth every penny for both packing & moving. I am thrifty in other areas, but moving is such a huge task that I'm more than happy to splurge on professionals. I haven't tried their unpacking service, but next time I might, given that I still have boxes that I haven't unpacked from my last move 15 months ago.

So, my sister-in-law and I were wondering when we were talking about having movers pack up our stuff (in our dreams where we have money)....did you pack up your underwear yourself? Or do they pack EVERYTHING? Inquiring minds want to know. Cause I think it would be weird to have movers see my underwear. Actually they have - my movers to Boston told me I didn't have to unpack my dresser, and uh, it didn't quite make it through the move in one piece...it was awkward.

Yes, they will pack everything unless you tell them to leave something alone. I don't have any embarrassing underwear so I had them pack all my clothes. But I do sometimes pack my CDs myself, because otherwise they stuff them in boxes willy-nilly without paying attention to the alphabetical ordering, and it's a huge pain to re-sort them.

professional movers are not a luxery

Like professional plumbers, electricians and other contractors, movers like Gentle Giant save you physical pain, time and irritation. As a kid (and adult), I had to help move my parents three or four times. I do not recommend this unless you've got crushing debt. When I moved from my apartment into the home of my future wife, it cost me $900 including getting the packing materials delivered to my apartment.
