Drill baby drill

Remember when "politically correct" referred to policies that threatened freedom of expression, rather than the vague but hateful forces that tied the president's hands from building the camps immediately?

Yes, actually, it was for a period of about 24 months around 1988.

that was a stolen meaning too, stolen by people who resented attempts to confront various oppressions. its first meaning was a positive one.

Totally. Nobody remembers this anymore, but I'm pretty sure I have the Newsweek articles from 1991 to prove it!
jazzfish: "Do you know the women's movement has no sense of humor?" "No, but hum a few bars and I'll fake it!" (the radical notion that women are people)

Rule of thumb: in contemporary usage, "politically correct" actually means "correct." As in, "Well, it wouldn't be politically correct to do X" means that, in fact, only an asshole would even think of doing X.

More precisely: "politically correct" means "I approve".
